What's in my suitcase?

Since I have been doing a lot of traveling this year I thought an appropriate post would shine light on what comes along. Traveling with T1D and Celiac requires planning, but no fears it can be done! I am not going to lie, having to have extra space in my bag for supplies, insulin and gluten free snacks can be annoying, but I know when I get to my destination it will be worth it. Of course I already have issues deciding what to bring as far as clothes and shoes goes so in a way figuring out what to bring for the others areas is a little more straight forward. I know exactly what I need to bring I just have to make sure I do not forget anything! Otherwise I will have a serious Marcia Brady hairbrush forgetting moment on the plane.

Here are a few snapshots from my recent trip to St. Thomas of what came along.

An extra sensor, tests strips, lancets, insulin pen needles and alcohol swabs.

Glucose tablets in case of low blood sugars. I prefer to have juice for a low as I find it works faster, but it is always important to be prepared and have extra.

This is a MUST as I use it to test my blood and the blue pen is my insulin.

Now for snacks, clearly I need to bring enough protein bars along with me otherwise I will start to hyperventilate, seriously. I didn't snap a shot of my Tupperware, but just imagine all of these and then some coming along for the trip...

I remember the first trip after being gluten free we brought a whole suitcase full of food to Aruba. Luckily we realized we overdid it and that is no longer necessary. There are plenty of options and with so much more awareness about it hotels, restaurants and airlines are providing more options.

It is funny, after almost 10 years of having T1D, I think I have been stopped 2x going through security for my needles, insulin, etc. I have been stopped more often for the food I bring. When they need to touch my bars I go a little crazy lol.

It isn't fun to have to bring all of this stuff and it is just a little stressful making sure I have everything, but I would much rather being extra and be prepared! I also always bring these necessities in my carry on... It would not be fun if these were lost!
